Streaming audio is a method of delivering audio, in real-time over the Internet or corporate Intranets, with no download wait and no file to take up space on your hard disk. Effectively what happens is as soon as you request a streaming audio file – usually by clicking on a button – the first 2 or 3 seconds of the file is downloaded to your computer.

This immediately starts to play and as it does, the server continues to download the rest of the file. By the time the first few seconds of sound have been played, the next few seconds are ready, hence creating a continuous "stream".

The other day I was doing a streaming audio project for a school and needed some sound effects.

I found a site called Soungle which provides royality free sound effects.Soungle is a free site, developed by Southern Codes, for finding all kind of sound FX and musical instruments samples on our mega online library.

 As different from most of similar sites, Soungle is NOT a Web search engine. It only searches in our growing monster database. Our goals are to keep it simple to use (search, preview and download) and to keep it free.Keyword searches are performed by entering any word or phrase in a search box.

The retrieved results of a keyword search are displayed ten to a page. Clicking on play icon allows you to preview a file. Download button instantly downloads the sound effect or musical instrument sample file. A short description of the sound appears on top of every sound , followed by the frame rate, duration and bit rate.

Remember, all of their sound effects and samples are royalty free for downloading.

What sort of sounds can you search for at Soungle.com?

Users can search for the sounds of melodious birds such as the thrush bird or blue jay. Or users can download sound effects such as door bells and rushing water. Soungle.com is easy to use.  What is Streaming Audio?

It is the process where you take an audio file and place it on a web page so that your visitors can listen to it.

In most cases we would use what is called archived audio. This is where you pre record your audio so that it does not matter when a visitor comaes and clicks the play button they will get the audio delivered as a whole for each indirvidual visitor.

This compared to live audio where a visitor has to visit your page at a specific time to hear the audio.

Both are streamed however live audio quite often requires special servers and equipment where as archived audio can be played off nearly any server and need no special equipment to stream the audio.

Archived streaming audio is usually delivered via flash because of the reach in the marketplace of flash plugins and software. Most people already have these on their computers so they simply click and play.

How Do I Make My Audio File?

There is a lot od audio editing software around however we have found a great free software program you can use to create and edit your audio. It is called Audacity.

What do I do once I have created the Audio?

Once you have created the audio it is simply a matter of using MP3 Sound Stream to create the files and code to place on your website. Once MP3 Sound Stream has converted your audio you copy and paste some text and place where you want the audio to appear on your website then upload the two files it creates and your done.
